End of Financial Year Computers for Kids

Each year the Shack Group collects surplus business and computer equipment for distribution to homes and families that need them. In past years our clients and partners have been generous in donating their surplus hardware to the cause of others. We appreciate all of their efforts and look forward to making a difference in the lives of others this year too. While we tend to organize most of our donations in the Christmas season, our collecting and warehousing of used computers for the program continues throughout the year.

As technology cycles advance, used computers retain more and more functionality for education and training purposes in the basics of Information Technology. Students gain valuable hands on training in computer repairs, hardware upgrades, and internal component configuration by assisting in the refurbishing and upgrade process. Basic computer literacy training is provided in the operating system and software packages enabled. Students fly into learning and quickly develop skills and proficiency when given direct access to these computers, building the basis for more advanced training and programming.

A new course we are taking this year with our used computer donations is providing students with the opportunity to work with the Open Source Linux operating system. Linux is not only free to install and use, providing all the functionality of the Windows platform, it also comes with a wide range of Open Source software that can extend functionality. Students can have access to advanced image editing, 3-D design, word processing, and digital music software without the high costs involved with proprietary software. Working with Linux also builds skills that can be later used in Network Administration jobs practically.

Businesses upgrading their office equipment are encouraged to contact the Shack Group for details about participating in this program. We are working with our financial department to draw up a way to give businesses a receipt for their donations as charitable contributions. Businesses who would like to do more can donate to a fund used to buy parts for repair and upgrade of these machines. The Shack Group is also developing plans to assist in the opening of computer labs in association with existing neighborhood community centers in Australia.

Computer donation is a win-win situation for both the businesses involved and the community at large. As time progresses, the Shack Group is looking to integrate our charitable work in used computer donation to the community with direct sponsorship of students in computer training programs through scholarships. Our Alumni Association will be coordinating these efforts, and Shack Group employees or clients who wish to participate directly are encouraged to contact the Alumni Association for more information.
